Importance of a Vision

Looking at my vision board the other day had two effects on me: one was a feeling of excitement. This glimpse of what lay at the end of the road was thrilling. I could have that/be that/do that /feel that way?? Yassss! The other feeling was deflation and almost a head tilting disbelief that this was a possibility and not a fairy tale. The reason for the latter: I had a current reality that looked nothing like the beautifully crafted vision board.

Connecting with our future selves is essential to our growth.

There is a feeling that arrives when you are standing on the wrong side of your dreams: the side that has the journey ahead of you. It feels challenging to believe with all of your heart that the future self, and future life you are summoning, will arrive for you. Why? Because at this point in modern life, we have built a very solid relationship with instant gratification. Over the years life’s small desires have become instantly attainable. If we want something, we press a button and it magically arrives at the door. This level of instant gratification, paired with a shrinking attention span (thanks to social media), can result in feelings of instant defeat when goals don’t arrive like magic. The gift of delayed gratification is lost and with it any real sense of patience for the journey that accompanies growth.

So how do we get from here to there? For that answer, we connect with our future selves.

Begin by coming up with a vision for yourself for the next 6–12 months. Ask yourself questions like:

  • How do I want to look?
  • How do I want to feel?
  • What do I want to have?
  • Where do I want to live?
  • Who do I want to be in a relationship with?

Play in the field of your imagination envisioning the best scenarios without restriction. Your imagination is vital because that part of you is free and not invested in this version of your life. Creation is such a fun part of life, and this is what you are naturally good at!

There is a part of us that is wired for growth. For personal evolution. To become the next iteration of ourselves with intention. This is the part of us that takes stock of what is and what is not working and knocks on the door of our future selves to invite the next best version of ourselves to emerge.

Your vision is a direct connection to your future self. And if you sit in disbelief of that being attained it is because you are too attached to the current version of yourself.

Play within the fields of the creative visioning process. Then take a week just to imagine what your life would look like if you were living this new version of yourself. The simple idea of connecting to your future self is all it takes to initiate this journey.

What do you think about this? What are your immediate thoughts about having a vision for yourself?
